Things to see and do when visiting Windermere, Lake District National Park
Windermere and Bowness are two of the most popular spots in the Lake District, and for good reason. Located on the shores of England’s largest natural lake, they offer a perfect mix of stunning scenery, cosy cafes, lakeside walks, and family-friendly attractions. What's the difference between Windermere and Bowness?
Though often mentioned together, Windermere is the name of the town (and the lake), while Bowness-on-Windermere is the lakeside town just a mile down the road. The train station is in Windermere, but most lake cruises and waterside attractions start in Bowness.
Things to do in Windermere and Bowness
Windermere Cruise: Sail Between Bowness and Ambleside – Hop on a boat from Bowness Pier for a relaxing trip to Ambleside. This is a great activity if you’re wanting a decent view of the surrounding fells from the lake.
Visit The World of Beatrix Potter – A hit with kids and fans of Peter Rabbit.
Walk to Orrest Head – A short but rewarding hike from Windermere with sweeping views over the lake.
Explore the shops and cafes – Both towns have plenty of boutique shops, bakeries, and pubs to enjoy.
Hire a boat or kayak – Great for those wanting to explore the water at their own pace.
Where to eat in Windermere
Homeground Café – Popular for brunch and excellent coffee in Windermere. This is my favourite cafe in the Lakes and it serves the most incredible cakes and french toast.
The Angel Inn – Cosy pub in Bowness with views and hearty meals.
Parking and getting around Windermere
Windermere is well connected by train and bus. It’s a 15-minute downhill walk to Bowness.
Parking is available in both towns but can get busy arrive early in summer.
There are also local buses and taxis between the two.
Top three walks from Windermere and Bowness
Orrest head - a short but hilly walk with amazing views of the central fells and Langdales
The bay walk - a short lakeside walk with stunning views of the surrounding fells
School Knott - a 2 hour walk to an amazing view point, perfect for the summer when Orrest head is busy with tourists
