Achmelvich Beach, Scotland
About Achmelvich Beach
Located just a few miles north-west of Lochinver, Achmelvich Beach is one of those rare places that feels almost untouched. Quiet, remote and hidden from the road, it is one of my favourite places on the NC500. With its powder-white sands, turquoise water, and dramatic mountain backdrop, it’s hard to believe you’re still in Scotland. Whether you’re here for a paddle, a picnic, or simply to soak up the scenery, Achmelvich is a spot that captures the magic of the North Coast 500 perfectly.
Beyond its beauty, the bay is a haven for wildlife lovers. Keep an eye out for porpoises, dolphins, or the occasional minke whale offshore.
Parking at Achmelvich Beach
There’s a dedicated car park just a short walk from the beach, located near the Achmelvich Bay Caravan and Camping Site (postcode: IV27 4JB). The car park can get busy in summer, especially on sunny days, so it’s best to arrive early if you want a good spot. Parking is free, but donations are welcome to help maintain the area.
Vehicle Access and Restrictions
The road to Achmelvich is narrow and single track with several passing places, so take your time—especially if you’re driving a motorhome or towing a caravan. Large vehicles can make it, but it’s not ideal for very big motorhomes or wide campervans due to tight bends and limited turning space near the car park. If you’re in a larger vehicle, consider parking at Lochinver and walking or cycling in, or check in advance with the nearby campsite for access advice.
Dog-Friendly Information
Achmelvich Beach is dog-friendly all year round, making it a great stop for travellers with four-legged companions. Dogs will love running along the wide sandy stretch or splashing in the shallows, but as always, please keep them under control and clean up after them—especially during busy months when the beach attracts families and swimmers.
