The 6 best beaches on Scotland’s North Coast 500 road trip

Here are some of my favourite beaches along the NC500, perfect for a swim, walk or scenic day out

🗺️ Why are the NC500 beaches so special?

When people think of Scotland, they might picture rugged mountains, misty glens, and ancient castles, but the North Coast 500 is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the UK. Think powder-white sand, crystal-clear water, and barely a soul in sight.

The best bit? Many of these beaches are often a short drive or a part of the NC500 route, making them perfect for a quick stop, a wild swim, or even a picnic with a view.

Quick note: all of these beaches can be found in my handy North 500 guide and digital map here with location markers.

🏖️ 1. Achmelvich Beach

📍 Near Lochinver, West Coast

Achmelvich is a postcard-perfect beach with soft white sand and shallow turquoise water. It’s popular in summer but still manages to feel remote and away from the crowds. There’s a nearby campsite and even a youth hostel, ideal if you’re staying overnight.

We bought fish and chips from the nearby campsite and sat by the beach as the sun set. On the horizon behind us, the moody clouds started to roll in and in true Scottish style, the lovely blue sky turned to rain.

🏖️ 2. Dureness Beach (Balnakeil Beach)

📍 Near Durness, North Coast

This is by far my favourite beach and is one of the most awe-inspiring along the NC500. With miles of golden sand and turquoise waves rolling in from the North Atlantic, it feels wild and unspoilt, perfect for long walks, beach games, or simply soaking up the views. I found this beach by accident while on a run from Durness and came across a tail sailing ship as the sun started to set. Honestly one of the most beautiful sights I’d ever seen.

🏖️ 3. Dornoch Beach

📍 East Coast

Located just outside the charming town of Dornoch, this long stretch of golden sand is perfect for families and paddling. It’s one of the most accessible beaches on the route and has handy nearby facilities.

🏖️ 4. Sango Sands (Durness Beach)

📍 Durness, North Coast

Possibly the most dramatic beach on the NC500, Sango Sands sits beneath cliffs and is right next to the Sango Sands campsite. With views over the North Atlantic and good amenities nearby, it’s a great overnight stop. The Sango Sands campsite was probably one of the best along the whole route, with incredible views, clean a bathrooms and plenty of things to do nearby.

🏖️ 5. Clachtoll Beach

📍 North of Lochinver

Another west coast beauty, Clachtoll Beach features striking rock formations, soft white sand, and clear shallows ideal for a dip. It’s often quieter than Achmelvich, making it feel like a private paradise.

🏖️ 6. Strathy Beach

📍 Strathy, North Coast

Tucked below steep cliffs and surrounded by rugged headlands, Strathy Beach is a hidden gem that’s often missed by those rushing along the NC500. A short walk from the parking area takes you down to a wide sandy bay, flanked by dramatic rocks and grassy dunes, perfect for a peaceful stop or a paddle in the surf. When the tide is out, make sure to explore the rocky section to the right of the beach and walk between the caves.

The nearby cliffs offer fantastic viewpoints, and on a clear day, you’ll get panoramic views out to sea. It’s also a favourite among local surfers when the waves are right.

  • Great for: Scenic views, quiet beach time, surfing, photography

  • Parking: Small car park with a short walk to the beach

💡 Beach Tips for the NC500

  • 🧺 Pack a picnic - there aren't many beach cafés along the way

  • 🏊 Be cautious when swimming - many beaches have no lifeguards

  • 🦮 Keep dogs under control - especially near wildlife and sheep

  • 🚐 Arrive early in summer - some car parks are small and fill up quickly

  • 🌊 Respect the environment - take litter home and leave no trace
